Johannesburg J3a Postmark

Type J3 comprises squared circle postmarks. There are four types, all with 'Johannesburg' curved around the top. The first three types are 22 mm in diameter (measured across the circle) and the 4th type is 27 mm in diameter. There is either a single or double outer circle and an inner circle, with two partial rings in each corner topped off with a triangle. Some examples appear to be enclosed in a square box. They are known in black or blue ink

J3a has a three line date but does not have Z.A.R. at base; J3b has Z.A.R. at the base and a two line date as well as a code letter and may or may not be boxed; J3c has Z.A.R. at the base and a single line date; J3d was introduced later (1896), is larger (27 mm) and has a three line date

Johannesburg J2b Postmark

Type J2 comprises single circle postmarks. There are two types, J2a has a large dot at the base and J2b has 'Z.A.R.' at the base

J2b. A single circle 23 mm in diameter with 'Johannesburg' curving around the top, 'Z.A.R.' at the base and two dots either side in-between. There is a code letter at top and below that the date on two lines; the top line is the month in two letters followed by the day and below that is the year is in 2 figures. Dates seen range from 12 May 1890 to 2 January 1893. Code letters seen so far are B, C, D, D inverted, E, E inverted, F and I (Code I looks like an H sideways and is listed as such by Putzel). Codes E, F and I are seen most often. The detailed breakdown is as follows:
